What is the most overlooked muscle group to strengthen?
Updated: Dec 11, 2025

How many times have you heard that you need to strengthen your core? But what does that really mean? This phrase has become a staple in fitness advice, yet many people may not fully grasp what it truly entails. When you hear "strengthen your core," the first thought that often comes to mind is the idea of doing some crunches, maybe adding some squats to your routine, and then you're good to go. However, in my opinion, one of the most under-rated and under-strengthened muscle groups are your hip muscles, and most notably your hip abductors (think raising your leg out to the side, a movement that is often overlooked in conventional workout routines). Move over abs and gluetus maximus! The primary muscles I'm talking about are the gluteus medius, the gluteus minimus, and tensor fasciae latae. Among these, the gluteus medius stands out as the largest and most significant muscle. The gluteus medius muscle plays a crucial role in maintaining balance and overall stability of your hip joint. This muscle group is not only essential for supporting your hips, but it also plays a vital role in the alignment and stability of your spine and back, as well as your knees, ankles, and feet. The importance of strengthening your hip abductors cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to injury prevention. A strong gluteus medius can help protect against common injuries that may arise from improper movement patterns or muscle imbalances, such as lower back pain, hip pain, knee injuries, or even ankle or foot pain and injuries. Furthermore, if you are already recovering from an injury, pain, or a surgical procedure, focusing on these muscles can significantly aid in your rehabilitation process. Strengthening the gluteus medius can allow you to return to your normal activities more safely and effectively. So when you think of your core, it's essential to broaden your perspective and not overlook the importance of your hip abductors. Incorporating exercises that specifically target the gluteus medius into your fitness routine can lead to improved stability, enhanced athletic performance, and a reduced risk of injury. So, the next time you consider your core workout, remember that it encompasses much more than just the traditional ab or glute exercises; it includes the powerful muscles that support your entire lower body and contribute to your overall functional strength!
